The Real King's Landing
Updated: Apr 5, 2020
Our last full day in Malta was spent exploring Valetta (or King's Landing for anyone who watches Game of Thrones!)
Valetta is seriously stunning, a little jewel in Malta's crown.
We headed straight to the Upper Barrakka Gardens, for the best views of the harbour. I honestly felt like I was in a scene looking out over Blackwater Bay.
The later series were all filmed in Croatia, but this was the original location for series one.
We timed our arrival perfectly as they were just preparing to fire the noon day guns. They fire them every day at 12 and 4PM and are quite the sight (and sound!) to see.
The boom can be heard across the whole city.
After taking in all the views we were getting a little peckish, and Hannah knew just the place for lunch. Located in an old square you'll find Caffe Cordina, a beautiful old cafe loved by locals and tourists alike.
We sat out in the square, but it's definitely worth popping inside for a look at all the cakes and pastries, the decor is pretty opulent too. As always I ordered a pastizzi, but I had a salad for my main as I had my eyes on pretty sweet dessert.
Just down the road is a little gelateria called Amorino, and they serve ice-cream flowers.
No you did not read that wrong. Pick as many flavours as you'd like and they'll create a rose shaped scoop for your cone, complete with macaroon on top. I chose all the coffee, caramel and chocolately flavours, a perfect post-lunch replacement for a cappuccino.
I could barely eat it quick enough as we meandered the streets in the hot sun.
We passed ornate fountains and more little piazzas on our way down to the waterfront.

Where the locals pass time fishing in the shade (with a little help from their pet cats!)
We caught the ferry from Valetta to Sliema (a resort town further North up the coast) for a spot of shopping. Whilst still admiring the view over the water back towards Valetta.
A perfect last day in the Maltese sun!
