Fortnightly Favourites #11
Updated: Aug 4, 2019
This fortnight's favourites have a theme! My mum and I have been talking a lot recently about reducing single-use plastics in our day to day lives. Some swaps I made months ago and I haven't looked back, but there are so many products that may not even cross your mind as being particularly damaging to our planet, but they really are!
Every single plastic toothbrush ever made will be on this earth forever. They are indestructible, so will never break down. A billion toothbrushes will be thrown away in the United States this year alone. So lets start there!
1. Bamboo Toothbrushes
I got mine from Amazon, an easy peasy swap that if we all made would make a huge difference. And let's face it, they even look better in your bathroom than a bright pink plastic one. It's a no brainer.
2. My Chilly's Bottle
This isn't a recent swap, but I use it so much I wanted to include it. I take my Chilly's bottle me just about everywhere. To work, running errands, even just when I'm at home pottering around the house it's usually nearby. It keeps drinks cold for 24 hours or hot beverages toasty for up to 12 hours.
They also make such beautiful gifts for others too. With such an extensive range of colours, patterns and sizes, there's something for everyone.
3. Beeswax Food Wraps
These are a recent discovery as a replacement for clingfilm! Made from organic cotton and beeswax, you warm them up in your hands and then wrap/cover whatever you want to keep fresh. They can be washed and reused over and over again, and even refreshed in the oven with a little beeswax.
Perfect for packing up lunches or leftovers.
I got mine from Eco Habit and I'm really impressed!
4. Metal Straws
I've got to the stage where I'm quite surprised when I'm served a drink in a bar with a plastic straw. But, I don't love the paper ones either! At home I've switched to metal straws for cold drinks and smoothies! Also great for hot drinks as they won't melt!
5. Bamboo Cotton Buds
Another bamboo swap! I will openly admit that I hadn't even considered how many plastic cotton buds I was throwing away without a thought.
And they still look great on your vanity table.
Other swaps I've made!
Bottled fizzy water for a Sodastream machine
Face wipes for reusable make-up remover cloths
One use cups for a reusable coffee thermos
Plastic shopping bags for a recycled fabric tote bag
I've still got a long way to go, I'm on the hunt for a great zero plastic deodorant, shampoo and razor. If you've got any recommendations let me know! No-one can be perfect, and we all have slip ups, but as more of us start to make changes the impact will grow exponentially. After all, there is no Planet B.
