A Golden Afternoon, Keukenhof
Updated: Apr 6, 2020
I must say, whilst we were at the Keukenhof Tulip Gardens I felt like Alice in Wonderland when she discovered the garden of living flowers. A day amongst tulips, all in a golden afternoon.
Little bread-and-butterflies kiss the tulips And the sun is like a toy balloon There are get-up-in-the-morning glories In the golden afternoon
There are dizzy daffodils on the hillside Strings of violets are all in tune Tiger lilies love the dandelions In the golden afternoon
If you're in Amsterdam during tulip season (March till May) you should without a doubt make the trip over to Lisse to see the flower fields in all their glory. The jewel in the flower crown is Keukenhof, the stunning gardens dedicated to showcasing Holland's most famous flower. My idea of heaven.

You can get tickets in advance and save yourself a long queue on arrival! You can also buy tickets which include transport to the gardens (which is what we did), but if you have access to a car or want to catch the train to Lisse, these are both good options too.
The food is really overpriced at Keukenhof (I learnt this last time I was here), so we bought a picnic from a little supermarket in Amsterdam and took it with us.
Although we did forget a corkscrew for the wine, which made for a hilarious ten minutes whilst we prised our way in!
(Top tip: push the cork in with a blunt object, but watch out for spillage)
After we were full to the brim with all the bread, cheese and strawberries we'd been able to carry we decided we'd better walk some of it off.

There are so many flowers! And don't worry if you arrive a little too early or late for the main bloom, there's huge climate controlled pavilions where tulips flower March through May for you to admire to your heart's content.
Definitely the prettiest gardens I've ever visited!
Once back in the city we wanted to soak up every last drop of sunshine before heading back to our apartment to get ready for dinner. So we stopped in at my all time favourite bar in Amsterdam (maybe even the world!)
Venus and Adonis is a gorgeous little spot in Amsterdam's De 9 Straatjes (The Nine Streets to you and me). I first discovered this little gem when visiting with friends a couple of years ago, so I had to bring Hannah here during our trip.
Their Limoncello Spritz is to die for. It's not actually on the menu anymore, but if you ask for it they'll make it (tell them Vicky sent you - haha!).
Fizz topped up with Limoncello, day dreaming of flower fields whilst sunshine streams in through the huge open windows, sat with my best friend in the whole world. I don't think life gets better than that.
